Kundalini; A Picture and Poem Ablaze

Ablaze, a computer image by Harry Kottler

A Spirit Ablaze

Copyright 2007 Harry Kottler

----

When fortune

contrives to make you glad,

know fortune is neither glad nor sad.

----

False fortune

is just a passing faze;

true fortune is always a spirit ablaze.

----

That spirit

stays hot amidst life's rains.

That spirit

is above all praise and blame.

----

That spirit

is delighted by life's play.

That spirit

has no need to run away.

----

That spirit

stays high amidst life's blows.

That spirit

can never feel enclosed.

----

That spirit

is buoyant as a cloud.

That spirit

is immune to being proud.

----

That spirit

is brighter than the sun.

That spirit

can't be seen by everyone.

----

That spirit

is drunk but walks all lines.

That spirit

is totally divine.

----

That spirit

is newer than what's new.

That spirit

is truer than what's true.

----

That spirit

is finer than what's fine.

That spirit

− that spirit is mine.

I Am Learning to See God In the World

Living From the Depths of Being, by Helen Kottler, 2007, 22 ''x30", gouache, colored pencil and collage on black paper

I Am Learning to See God In the World

by Helen Kottler

I've just started rereading The Splendor of Recognition, An Exploration of the Pratyabhijna-Hrdayam, a Text on the Ancient Science of the Soul by Swami Shantananda. In reading the commentary on the first sutra, I had a great breakthrough in understanding. The first sutra is commonly translated as:

Consciousness in her freedom brings about the attainment of the universe.

I read the first page of Shantananda's commentary and realized that I had no time to read more, but I flipped ahead to see sections of the commentary on the first sutra and read another aspect of the sutra's meaning:

The universe is the means to attain the realization of consciousness in her freedom.

At that point I started to cry. I was crying with relief and gratitude. I understood that the world is not an obstacle to knowing God; if it is seen with understanding it is a means to realization. I guess in many past lifetimes I have falsely renounced life in the world. I remember the time I asked my Guru, Gurumayi, if I could be a swami(a monk). She laughed and she took the peacock feather wand she was holding and pressed it hard against my third eye (so hard that my body was pushed back about a foot). A week later I met my husband, Harry. Interestingly enough, we had both been told by psychics that we were half-monks. It was clear from the very start that, along with our spiritual practices together, we would both need to learn to see God in the world. When, a week after our meeting, we asked Gurumayi for her permission to get married, she made a joke, then paused, thought, and said, “Yes.” She was surprised by the suddenness of our decision, but she understood it completely. That was twenty-two years ago. (Harry and I first talked together on February 19th,1985.) As I was crying when I read the sutra, I was grateful for being blessed with the life that I've been given filled with prayer, family, work helping people, and creativity. I've truly been shown that one can know God while living in the world. If anyone wants to read Shantananda's book, it's available through the on-line bookstore at http://siddhayoga.org/.

 The Soul and Lincoln

Today I present two poem I wrote yesterday. One is about “getting it all” while the other is about yesterday's holiday
..............................
Total Grace
Copyright 2007 Harry Kottler
--------
Where is there an ashram?
Where is there a home?
Can I hit a grand slam?
Where's my sacred dome?
--------
Life now seems like heaven.
How can I extend?
How can I go higher?
Does heaven have an end?
------
Is heaven some place people reach
when they are not yet whole?
Can I go much higher?
Can I reach my soul?
------
Show me how to get there.
I am more than good.
My soul – It's wet there.
Fire up my hood.
------
Fire it with power
to propel past time and space.
I want my soul!
I want everything!
I want it all;
I want total grace!

Biding Our Time
A President's Day poem
Copyright 2007 Harry Kottler
-------
God bless our appointed Presidents
wherever they abide.
A few were bad, most were a mix,
while a few were strong and wise.
--------
I say “appointed Presidents”
because I do believe
we've deserved them all;
minds great and small
have embodied our people's needs.
-------
Some of our needs have been petty,
but our deepest needs have been sublime.
When will the next Lincoln come again?
We just have to bide our time.

With love and respect,

Harry and Helen

 A Dream With My Guru

Self Portrait, a computer drawing by Emily Kottler, age 12.

.......................................................................

Divine Messages Received In A Dream

by Helen Kottler

At about 3 A.M. On Sunday, February 18th , I had a dream of my Guru, Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. I was performing arati (worship) to pictures of the three Gurus of the Siddha lineage in modern times, Gurumayi, Baba Muktananda, and Bhagawan Nityananda, in an ashram ( a place of spiritual retreat). The ashram seemed more like a museum and the public was wandering through it looking at the pictures. As I did arati to each picture, I would see it was not one of the Gurus after all, but a painted image of an ancient sage(not necessarily from India). I then saw Gurumayi through some double doors which were partially open. She was so vibrant and present. I turned to my husband, Harry, and said, “Gurumayi is here!” He immediately and joyfully slipped into the room and sat at her feet. I turned to continue with my worship but found myself sitting on a grassy bank besides Gurumayi. I told her that she had named our twelve year old daughter, Emily,”Echo”. Gurumayi explained that this was a very auspicious name. Emily would echo or reflect the Guru's truth or light. I then found myself standing someplace with a small group of people waiting to see Gurumayi leave. I saw that there was a mess made by scattered children's toys in the area where she would exit. I couldn't believe that everyone there was not moving to clean it up, so I started myself and the others joined me. The mess now seemed to be left over construction pieces, but we did our best. Gurumayi came through as I bent down to clear the last piece. I could see her robes and her feet as she passed. She went down in the elevator. A long-time devotee and I went into the elevator to follow her. The elevator started falling faster and faster. It seemed like a free fall, but I was only vaguely concerned that we would hit the bottom hard. I thought, “There must be a brake,” and I found the brake and then woke up. When I woke up and shared the dream with Harry.

.................................................................

Harry's interpretation of the dream was as follows:

The ashram seems to the public visiting it to be just a museum, because the general public has no idea of the true power of spiritual lineages; they do not know that there have always been realized beings and in our times those being can give grace and transform ordinary human beings like you and I into saints.

The reason the pictures appear to be ancient sages is because lineages such as the one we are following are ancient. The reason all the sages are not necessarily from India is because the state of Enlightenment has been achieved by great beings throughout the world.

The fact that Gurumayi says that Emily would echo the Guru's truth is significant because the day before the dream Emily was given a lead role in a children's production at a local theater. Her part will be Charlotte the spider in Charlotte's Web. The director told Emily that she sees the character as being magical.

Helen's cleaning of the mess is indicative of her incredible devotion and diligence. What is the mess? It is the work people need to do to have grace totally transform their lives.

The elevators speed is indicative of the speed of Helen's spiritual journey. When the elevator seems in free fall, she's vaguely concerned (due to ego) and she thinks that there must be a brake and she finds its. The remembrance and finding of the brake is indicative of her supreme faith in the Guru and God.

Harry, Helen, and Emily
